"Through my work, I try instead to convey stories, emotions, questions..."

Could you introduce yourself?

Hello, my name is Mateo Villain. I'm a designer and sculptor based in Paris. After studying at ESA Saint-Luc in Tournai, Belgium, I'm now continuing my studies at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, in the object design department. I founded my multidisciplinary design studio two years ago, and I'm also one of the co-founders of the DeMaire collective.

What drives you in life?

I'm interested in art, in the vintage clothing I collect, and in both contemporary and vintage design. Downhill skateboarding also holds an important place in my life: I competed in the world championships as a teenager. I also have a keen interest in watchmaking, and of course in shoes and fine footwear.

What is your dream for the future, after your studies?

I have many dreams, but the main one would be to keep developing multidisciplinary projects and to bring design and sculpture together within my studio. I'd love to meet, collaborate and work around the world with people who are passionate and attuned to the contemporary issues I care about.

How do you approach beauty in your daily life?

When I create, I don't set out to produce beauty, because beauty remains highly subjective. Through my work, I try instead to convey stories, emotions, questions, or sometimes critiques. This happens mainly through materials and through dialogue. The approach gives rise to an aesthetic all its own, and a sincere one.
